Frequently asked questions
Questions About Pediatric Occupational Therapy
A pediatric occupational therapist helps children participate in everyday activities such as play, dressing, eating, handwriting, and school routines. At Continuity OT, goals are individualized around the activities that matter to your child and family.
What does a pediatric occupational therapist do?
What are signs my child may benefit from occupational therapy?
You might consider an OT consultation when everyday tasks regularly feel difficult—for example, handwriting is frustrating, buttons and zippers are hard to manage, or sensory experiences interfere with routines. A consultation is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and whether an evaluation would be helpful.
Handwriting involves several skills working together, including pencil control, visual-motor coordination, letter formation, spacing, and attention. An OT evaluation can explore which parts of writing are challenging and identify appropriate supports.
Why does my child struggle with handwriting?
Can I ask about sensory concerns such as loud noises or clothing tags?
Yes. You can discuss how sounds, clothing textures, movement, or other sensory experiences affect your child’s daily activities. An evaluation can explore these concerns in context and help determine appropriate next steps.
What if my child struggles with buttons and zippers?
Dressing can require finger coordination, using both hands together, and following a sequence of steps. Occupational therapy can address these skills through practice, adaptations, and strategies that fit your child’s routine.
