Help your child build the foundations for handwriting—one line, shape, and movement at a time.
From Lines to Letters is an OT-guided handwriting readiness workbook created by Kenny Zalar, occupational therapist and owner of Continuity Occupational Therapy LLC.
Designed for children ages 3–5, the workbook introduces foundational prewriting and pencil-control activities before moving into selected uppercase letter forms. Clear models and tracing supports gradually fade, giving children opportunities to practice with increasing independence.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
• Prewriting practice with vertical and horizontal lines, circles, crosses, squares, diagonals, X shapes, and triangles
• Curved, wavy, zigzag, looping, and spiral pencil paths
• Activities for starting, stopping, and changing direction
• Visual-motor practice copying simple shapes and patterns
• An introduction to selected uppercase letter forms
• Adult guidance for positioning, paper stabilization, and comfortable practice
• Progress checklists and a completion certificate
WHO IT’S FOR
Parents, preschool teachers, homeschool families, and occupational therapists looking for structured handwriting readiness activities.
Suggested ages are a guide—not a requirement. Choose activities that fit the child’s current skills, interests, and readiness.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
This workbook emphasizes the skills that come before formal handwriting instruction. Rather than asking children to jump straight into alphabet practice, it provides opportunities to explore the strokes, shapes, movement patterns, and pencil control used to construct letters.
The goal is meaningful practice and progress—not perfection.
HOW TO USE IT
Print the pages you need and work alongside your child during short, encouraging practice sessions. Demonstrate the activity, offer support as needed, and revisit pages as skills develop.
